ANTIQUITIES CONSULTING SERVICES

CONSULTING SERVICES: AUTHENTICATING AND IDENTIFYING YOUR ANTIQUITIES

Authentication and identification are the key elements in building a collection of ancient art. We at Clio Ancient Art are often contacted by private owners and museums wishing to identify objects and learn if the they are genuine ancient artifacts, reproductions, fakes, forgeries, or tourist trinkets.

As a service to antiquities collectors and owners, Clio Ancient Art provides authentication and identification services. For a fee of $50.00 per hour or portion thereof, we will review your quality digital images or examine your objects in person, and inform you in writing as to the precise nature of the objects you own, their origin, place and time of manufacture, potential value, etc. If your items are found to be genuine antiquities, certificates of authenticity may be made available upon request at no additional charge.

We also offer private owners and collectors guidance with bringing their individual antiquities or entire collections to sale through the major auction houses in London and New York. Our fees for this service are the same as those listed above, at $50.00 per hour.

Fees for our identification and authentication services are payable in advance and may be made either via PayPal (simply by looking up chris@clioancientart.com) or by check. For large collections, terms may be negotiated in advance with the customer.

For private owners or museums who know nothing about the objects they have come to own, determining where to start or whom to speak with can be bewildering. The antiquities trade is complex and full of potential pitfalls. There are fly-by-night internet “dealers” in antiquities and ancient coins on certain well known internet auction sites who knowingly or unknowingly offer fakes, forgeries and reproductions. Education is the key to avoiding these traps. Our own links page —  — is a good starting point in building a knowledge base about antiquities and ancient art. Dealing only with a well established and reputable, specialized dealer in antiquities and ancient art with a formal background in this field is also highly recommended.

Here’s what one of our clients has to say about Clio’s consulting services –

“I was interested in antiquities for years but did not understand the market well enough to make a purchase.  Two things I wrestled with: was the item real and what was it really worth.  That all changed when I contacted Chris. I asked him about an item he had online but had sold hours before my call. As it turns out, that was the best call I every made on antiquities. Chris guided me on no less than 15 occasions.  Without him I would have made several bad purchases: some not as advertised and others just overpriced. A dealer complimented me on my knowledge and sent me a new description and price on an item when (because of Chris) I questioned the date. Chris makes me look like an expert. I would recommend his services to anyone. The antiquities market is a challenging one to maneuver.  Chris’s advice was the best antiquities purchase I ever made.”
