Often overshadowed by “sexier” cultures, such as Egypt, Greece and Rome, the Migration Period and Early Medieval Period cultures — Visigoths, Franks, Vikings, Saxons and Normans — produced extraordinary objects of great beauty. Over the last couple of decades, in light of new discoveries and research, the old view of the early Middle Ages as strictly a “dark age” has begun to be called into question.
